Fiordland is the home of some of New Zealand's most famous sites, including Mitre Peak, and Milford and Doubtful Sounds. It is situated on the south-western corner of the South Island, with the main centre the attractive town of Te Anau. Milford Sound is 2-2 ½ hours drive from Te Anau, and Lake Manapouri is only 20 minutes away. Te Anau has plenty of accommodation, fine dining and shops to be enjoyed.

Fiordland National Park was established in 1952 and is over 1.2 million hectares in size. The area was well-known to the early Maori who hunted, fished and sought Pounamu (greenstone) in the area on a seasonal basis. Much of Fiordland is only accessible by sea or air and it has the wettest climate in New Zealand. Fiordland is home to a number of endemic plants and endangered species of bird, including the Takahe, and the world's only flightless parrot, the Kakapo. The area is known for its walking tracks including the Milford Track, the Kepler Track and the Routeburn Track.
